Cannabis Color Variations

Thailand may have created it! But, it was the Americans who exploited it and made the name famous! Nam Vet lived through it . . .

Landrace Post Sparked the need to research topic and provide answer!

how many generations does a marijuana strain grow before considered a landrace?

"A modern marijuana strain cannot become a true landrace simply by being grown for a specific number of generations"

Why Generation Count Doesn't Create A Landrace?

Simply growing a plant for multiple generations does not automatically create a landrace. A landrace is a distinct, locally adapted variety of a domesticated plant or animal that develops over time through a combination of natural selection, traditional farming practices, and environmental pressures in a specific geographic region.

  1. Landraces Require Genetic Diversity • The Generation Trap: If you breed a highly uniform, commercial hybrid or inbred line for 20 generations in one place, you do not get a landrace. You simply get an stabilized inbred line or an heirloom. • The Genetic Reservoir: True landraces possess immense internal genetic diversity. They are a population of varied individuals, not a uniform monoculture. This diversity allows the population as a whole to survive unpredictable weather, pests, and diseases.

  2. Isolation and Geographic Context • Localized Gene Flow: A landrace develops in relative isolation within a specific geographic or cultural region. It adapts to the unique soil, microclimate, altitude, and biodiversity of that exact space. • Open Pollination: Without isolation from modern crops or other varieties, the genetic integrity of the evolving landrace population gets diluted or altered by outside pollen, resetting or disrupting the adaptive process.

  3. Cultural and Human Selection • Traditional Practices: Landraces are co-created by humans and nature. Traditional farmers do not select for perfect uniformity like modern industrial breeders. Instead, they often save seed from a mix of the best-performing plants that survived the season's unique challenges. • Dynamic Adaptation: The farmer's selection criteria evolve alongside changing local needs, culinary traditions, and storage methods, keeping the crop dynamically adapted rather than statically fixed.

  4. Heirloom Strains • Definition: Older, open-pollinated or traditionally preserved cultivar lines kept alive through continuous multi-generational human cultivation. • Origin: Often derived from original landrace populations brought out of their native regions (e.g., 1960s/70s counterculture imports) and grown/adapted elsewhere. • Characteristics: • Retains unique, old-school terpene and cannabinoid profiles. • Higher phenotypic variation (more plant-to-plant diversity) than modern hybrids. • Longer or variable flowering times. • Examples: Original Haze lines, early regional/domestic cuts.

  5. IBL (Inbred Line) Strains • Definition: A genetically stabilized line produced by repeated inbreeding (sibling or self-pollination) over multiple generations. • Goal: To fix and lock in uniform traits—such as structure, aroma, potency, and flowering time—so seeds grow true-to-type.• Characteristics: • High uniformity and consistency across a crop. • Predictable expression, making them valuable anchor stock for breeding projects. • Risk of inbreeding depression (loss of vigor) if parental selection is poor. Wha• Examples: Classic stabilized lines like Skunk #1 or Northern Lights.

I only can have memories of thailand (laos, vietnam) now. No dreams. Would be nice to sit under tree your farm and speak you & lorenzo. Too old now! You ever come to US and get sick of listening to big marijuana people, come to our house. We make bed for you, sight see, very little ganja talk.

I have always believed in landrace plants. Best i can do is IBL now.

Many sell heirlooms as landrace in the western world, that adds to the confusion and ye big people in the industry do trigger confusion and what not, cause for some, landrace is a label to get more money or even status dunno, but i believe in the power from real people with both feet solid on the ground , like prempavee and love of landrace for example

We would definitely love to visit the US. Hopefully the situation there can de-escalate and will be safe again to visit. We have many people who invite us and it will be amazing to be there.

Great read, thanks for sharing :fire: it's nice to know that history.

Brings back memories from 1974 of me pilfering buds of Colombian Gold and Colombian Redbud from my older brother's stash, before he knew I was smoking weed.

Both were priced (in Chicago area) at $35.00 for a four finger lid.

OMG, that Redbud high was so much better than the $15.00 (five finger) lids of Mexican swag, I was selling...LOL, those were the days

or, they fade away by mixing in modern hybrids and their great great grandchildren children get it all stable again!
