Diversity of Chitral, Hindu Kush
West has reduced diversity for the Hindu Kush phenotype to a single image: short, squat, broad-leafed plants barely reaching knee height.
But that isn’t the whole picture.
The modern Western idea of a “Kush” plant has been heavily shaped by ex-situ breeding and repeated selection. Once a population is reproduced and selected outside its original environment for particular traits, variation can narrow around the characteristics people want.
Look at the in-situ Chitral populations, and the picture becomes much more complicated. And thats where most of the folks get confused i have been called a lot lately and people have denied the actual in situ version of Chitral phenos.
In Mastuj, Chitral, you can find plants from the same region and growing in the same season that look remarkably different.

One expression: tall, sturdy and umbrella-shaped, carrying enormous fan leaves and a powerful structure.

Another: compact, squat and broad-leafed, closer to the phenotype many people have come to associate with “Kush.”
