One of my plants was showing some yellowing between the veins. I gave them some Epsom salts last weekend, and since then the yellowing had gotten worse, and now I'm seeing some damage. Any advice is welcome.
Is that reused soil ?
Yes
How did you reamend the soil
Grew out some clover, chopped it and mulched it in, then topped it with some fresh living soil.
Can you measure ph in the soil in some way and what water are you using, tap water ? RO
How did you give the epsom ?
Should only give like a mild foliar, i suspect your soil might be in lockout and thats why you should measure ph
If you have soluble kelp meal it would be good for foliar now. Do not add anything more to soil as it may be to hot
Can you tell if they have been overwatered or underwatered
Any info would help, even your climate and lights
I use tap water left to off-gas overnight ph at 6.5. For the Epsom salt, I did 2tbsp/gal and watered as normal. I thought they looked dry, so I did give them an extra water this week. I currently only have a cobbled together rack of mismatched grow lights leftover from other projects.
I would use RO or rainwater, if they add chloramine instead of chlorine it will not offgass, i think you can find info online about your location
However you have grown with this water before so it's probably not the issue
Lights is ok but don't keep them too close as your plant is struggling now
Your epsom dose is way too high, so do not give more, teaspoons would be enough
Im only beginner with living soil, so i hope someone more experienced will chime in
Double check your soil moisture dig down a bit to see if it is soaked, its a small plant that doesnt use too much water and if it's in lockout it uses even less. If it's totally wet down in the soil ( try to lift and feel the weight of the pot) you can use a stick and poke some holes down like 10cm away from the plant but only if very wet
If they are dry enough for water get some humic/fulvic acid to mix in your water at 50% or lower than manufacture recommend, adjust the water a tad lower than 6.5 but not under 6.0
I would still wait for what experienced living soil growers will say ... Just check what you can
Using a moisture meter for soil can help a lot with determining when to water, some also measure ph
Thanks for all the help. I appreciate it.
Im happy to help and hoping to learn as i might have the same issue when i amend my own living soil
Best of luck
Mmm, that pot looks so small and if is old soil where you just growers some clover and chopped that is not sufficient
Epson salts they provide magnesium
I think to regenerate the soil you have to make a compost pile where you open up all the soil from the pots and add other organic matter and earthworms and mycelium and after six month to one year you can use again
The chopped grass is not composted so I think it will just crate unhealthy enviroment for the plant
I agree with Prem your pot is too small if you're only topdressing your pot with new soil that would be a no till setup and that would require a much larger pot.
No till you would typically amend with new powders ontop let it sit for long 4-5 weeks at least
Did you amend with new living soil, bought or home made, how much did you add?
Did you put some of the mulch under the topdress? If so that would require very long(months) before ready like Prem says
If you can get high quality wermicompost brand like Top-Quality Vermicompost by Colorado Worm Company – BuildASoil
You could theoretically continue with this pot using foliar feeding and teas for your soil
The easiest route for sure would be potting in new living soil and take your old soil and reamend it with dry amendments let it cook for min 3-4 weeks
You can use a tarp to mix your soil and keeping it while it cooks, i can help you with the process if you choose that route
Yes. I was trying to go for a no till setup. I didn't know my pots were too small. I'll transplant into some fresh soil. I have a 30 gal container that's half full of leftover living soil. If I mix the hot pots into that container, keep it damp and aerated, and let it recover over a few months, would that be enough to reuse the soil again?
Dont have time currently, please check current post on IG, you will understand after reading, than comeback here, ig is bad, will post here too later
For you & your huge community it doesnt matters where you post, we on the other side got smaller regional communities that network together via IG(instead of competing or dickriding like 60-70% of IG & "legacy" sell outs) ig best wheapon against ig.. and it's like a flow: goes in both directions. Hi sorry for late reply
When you first bought the soil was it finish to use living soil or just potting soil?
Your leftover living soil is that used soil?
How much aeration is in the soil like perlite or pumice or rice husks? There should be roughly 1/3 of the soil while 1/3 wermicompost or another high quality compost and 1/3 peat moss or coco, from the look of it i think you have peat
30 gallon is very good size for no till
same as I've started
When your soil have been used one round you need to replenish all the used nutes
Be sure there is enough aeration mixed in, if not you should get some
Make sure it never goes dry especially peat as it become hydrophobic and repels water, if dry use time lill by lill wet it down so it have time to soak up the water, if it comes out under your pouring to fast. I like to use a sprayer and misting from top
Soil should have moisture like a wrung out sponge, so you barely can squeese out a few drops of water. The moisture level is key in living soil and is where many fail, including myself
Since you are starting over its a good idea to mix the new dry amendments and wermicompost in the whole soil and not just the top, however this route is a lot of work and take longer
If you can use a tarp it will be a lot easier and less messy, if not you can do it in your 30 gallon pot
List of what you need if you follow the same recipe i will
Nutrients:
- Raw kelp meal (not water soluble) 1/2 cup
- Crustecean meal 1/2 cup
- Neem cake or alfalfa meal 1/2 cup
Mineral and ph buffer
- Oyster shell flour 1/2 cup
- Basalt or glacial rock dust 1 cup
The wermicompost about 3 gallons
Mix together the dry powders and then mix them into the soil then mix in the compost and aeration
Wet it evenly gradually until perfect moisture level
You can also add the soil to the pot and then add the powders on top and then the compost on top of that again. You will need a load of red wiggler worms to mix your nutes for you atleast 100 worms, they will multiply. Let them dive down into your soil and then cover the top with a good layer of straw
Keep a perfect moisture level all the time
Min 2 weeks if you choose to only topdress or 3-4 weeks if you mix all in and
Some people grow directly when topdressing, but since you haven't used as a no till system the biology needs time to get right, especially if your soil has been dry at one point
I let it go allmost three months before i planted but that was a soil built from scratch with coco
Btw i dont think your soil is hot, that was wrong of me to say, it's most likely missing a lot except mg after you gave epsom salt
I am a big advocate of research. . .Here are a couple to start with:
Diagnose your own . . .

and build your own. . . .
Prempa Mg is a macronutrient. It is just below NPK in importance. In epsom salt besides Mg it adds sulphur.
Mag-Cal instead of Cal-Mag ![]()
