When is something considered a landrace?

It all evolved from the steppes of Central and South Asia the scholars say! Then we should bring to light the first adaptation of sativa and indica.

2000+ years ago trade routes introduced cannabis from South Asia and the Middle East

Cannabis arrived in Southeast Asia via Arab and Indian traders during the Middle Ages (roughly 500 to 1500 CE), long after the plant's evolutionary and domestic origin.

About 1600s sativa gets introduced to Colombia and Mexico by the Spanish as hemp for textiles.

Cannabis arrived in the Caribbean primarily via South Asian Indentured Labourers (mid-19th century), with potential earlier or parallel colonial/African contact,

Would have assumed it came from northern china /himalaya through Yunnan into Laos or so , did not know south east asia got it from arab traders that " late" . nice people those Arabs! :joy:

If landraces (not feral) are tied to a geographical area and the result of growers' selection over decades/centuries, putting heirlooms in a new environment (new terroir, as you can't make landraces indoor) we could call them "Land-raised heirlooms" until they adapt to their new environment and a consensus between growers recognise in them a new genetic line with specific characteristics resulting from their adaptation.

Landraces are not a fixed genetic pool, it evolves constantly, even the one we know now may very well differ in a few decades with climate change and human interactions.

I believe in its resilience, it has evolved with and without our involvement: it will adapt even to our human errors (as long as we are free to grow it, or we take that liberty).

Recent morphometric studies suggest intentional use and cultivation may have begun 20,000 years ago during the last ice age; its use for food and fiber in East Asia by at least 8,000 BCE, while the earliest direct evidence of smoking cannabis for its psychoactive effects was discovered in 2,500-year-old tombs in western China.

What we call Thai landraces may very well be the fruit of "Chinese" or other nomads growers some millenia ago who came with their seeds (what we'd call heirlooms).

The only thing we can do is assure its diversity (like trying new "land-raised heirlooms") and preserve what we believe should be preserved (landraces are made by and for humans after all).

Yes I think that to ensure a 100% production that follows the principles of organic agriculture and respect of the wild as equal rights for the animals will be sufficient to guarantee that

I think the term that I've landed on is "regional heirlooms". Regional implies it is from a place and heirloom implies intentional cultivation and genetic preservation over generations. That feels like a nice middle ground for landrace varieties grown outside their native range.

When Landrace Marijuana Seeds Become Heirloom?

A landrace cannabis seed becomes an heirloom when it is taken from its native region, cultivated in a new environment, and maintained by growers for decades or more without crossbreeding, while preserving its original genetic identity.

Can modern hybrid marijuana seeds become heirloom?

Yes, modern hybrid marijuana seeds can become heirlooms, but they must undergo a rigorous process of genetic stabilization and survive decades of historical preservation.

Can modern hybrid marijuana seeds become heirloom grown indoors?

Yes, modern hybrid marijuana seeds can eventually become heirloom varieties grown indoors, but it requires a long-term stabilization process called inbreeding to make them "breed true."

Can landrace marijuana seeds become heirloom grown indoors?

Yes, landrace marijuana seeds can absolutely become heirloom strains when grown indoors.

By definition, an heirloom cannabis strain is a landrace population that has been removed from its native geographic region and cultivated elsewhere without being crossbred with modern hybrids.

When you take true landrace seeds—which are wild, open-pollinated populations adapted over millennia to a specific regional climate—and grow them inside a tent or grow room, you are performing what botanists call an, ex-situ reproduction.

How long must marijuana IBls be grown before becoming heirloom?

An Inbred Line (IBL) does not automatically become an heirloom through a set number of growing cycles. The terms refer to different biological and historical milestones:

• IBL Timeline: Achieving an inbred line (homogeneity and fixed traits) takes about 6 to 8 generations or roughly 1.5 to 2 years of targeted sibling/self-breeding.

• Heirloom Definition: An heirloom is not measured by single-grow duration, but by decades or generations of cultural and regional preservation (typically 30–50+ years, or legacy lines from the 1960s/1970s) without modern multi-hybrid crossbreeding.

Sorry to Bogart! Topic got me tripping! Like taking a course.

Open Pollination vs. Isolation: Maintaining landrace integrity requires open or traditional multi-parent pollination within the local population. Strict isolation or tight bottlenecking changes it from a dynamic landrace into an heirloom or a locally adapted/selected line.

Are landrace marijuana plants grown in a different geographical area considered a landrace?

No, plants grown outside their native region are not strictly considered landraces; they are typically classified as heirloom or acclimated strains.

Ex: some Hawaiian strains like Maui Wowie or Puna Buddar are often classified as "acclimated-landrace."

The original traders who spread marijuana seeds globally delivered landrace, they became heirloom once the recipients grew them. But, adaptation and time then created a new landrace in certain regions of the world.
