My wife ran out of our cannabis salve, so I documented the process of making a new batch and figured I’d share the recipe here.
-
1oz (28g) shake or trim
-
1lb (448g) coconut oil
-
1/3c (35g) beeswax
-
1/3c (80ml) olive oil
-
10 drops essential oil
-
Sheet pan
-
Saucepan
-
Pyrex bowl
-
Fine sieve
-
Cheesecloth
-
Mason jars
To start, divide 1oz (28g) of ganja in half. Place half of the ganja on a sheet pan and decarboxylate in a 250°F (121°C) oven for one hour stirring halfway tthrough. I like the 50/50 split so the salve with have both activated and inactive cannabanoids.
Technically, that’s an oz, but I’m making a batch of butter too.Raw & decarbed ganja.
Halfway through the decarb, start melting the coconut oil on low heat in a double boiler. Then when the decarb is finished add both the raw and decarbed ganja into the oil and leave it to infuse for 3 hours.
When the ganja is done infusing into the oil strain it through a mesh sieve using some cheesecloth.
Pour your infused coconut oil into a saucepan along with 1/3c (35g) beeswax, 1/3c (80ml) olive oil, and 10 drops of essential oils (optional for scent). Slowly heat on low stirring occasionally until the beeswax is fully melted and mixed in.
Recipe makes approx 2.5c (590ml). I store it in small mason jars. Store in a cool dry place away from light. Every so often the wax solidifies in the mixture making the lotion gritty. Just heat until fully melted and stir well to fix it.
The essential oil we use is an aromatherapy scent that smells like menthol/eucalyptus. Somehow coconut, ganja, and menthol combine into a surprisingly subtle pleasant scent. This lotion is great for everyday aches and pains, and one batch lasts my wife and I for months.
